The prospect of passage of the land acquisition bill in the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament further dimmed after the joint Parliamentary panel decided to extend the panel's term by another week, from July 28th to August 3rd.

The panel members expressed their anger at the fact that the four Secretaries of the Ministries concerned, who were scheduled to brief the committee on the amendments to the land acquisition law were absent. Senior opposition members also took exception to government's attempts to suggest during the meeting of NITI Aayog that the state governments are free to have their own laws in place of the land acquisition law.
