In Odisha, land acquisition for the Rs 52,000 crore Posco steel project has been suspended temporarily following stiff opposition from local villagers of trouble-turned Dhinkia gram panchayat in Jagatsinghpur district. Additional District Magistrate of Paradip, Jagatsinghpur, Saroj Kant Choudhury, said land acquisition process will be suspended till further orders. He, however, said ancilliary works for the project will continue in the 2000 of the total 4004 acres of land acquired in Polanga, Bhuyanpala, Nuagaon, Bayanalkunda and Nolia Sahi of the project area. Meanwhile, a CPI (M) delegation led by party's leader in the Lok Sabha, Basudev Acharya, is visiting Gound Zero of the project area today to lend suport to the agitating local villagers. The visit of eminent social activists Swami Agnivesh, Medha Patkar and several political leaders from Congress, BJP, NCP, CPI, CPI (M), Forward Block, RJD and Samajwadi Party extending support to the anti-Posco stir have boosted the morale of agitating villagers protesting forceful land acquistion for the project by the Odisha Government. The meeting between Odisha Government and Posco Joint Action Committee, a pro-Posco body, to resume construction work in the project area has also failed. The Posco Joint Action Committee has been asking the Odisha Government to meet six of their demands before resumption of project work.
