In Odisha, land acquisition for the 52,000 crore rupees Posco steel project has been suspended temporarily following stiff opposition from local villagers of Dhinkia Gram Panchayat in Jagatsinghpur district. Additional District Magistrate of Paradip, Jagatsinghpur, Saroj Kant Choudhury, said land acquisition process will be suspended till further orders. He, however, said ancilliary works for the project will continue in the 2000 of the total 4004 acres of land acquired in Polanga, Bhuyanpala, Nuagaon, Bayanalkunda and Nolia Sahi of the project area. A Central delegation of five political parties, CPI, CPI (M), Forward Block, RJD and Samajwadi Party comprising of CPI leader in the Lok Sabha Gurdas Dasgupta, CPI (M) leader in Lok Sabha Basudeb Acharya, Forward Block MP Narahari Mohanta, are on a visit to the Ground Zero area of trouble-turned Dhinkia gram panchayat of Posco project site. They are meeting the agitating villagers who are protesting forceful land acquistion for the South Korean steel major by the Odisha government and also scheduled to address a public meeting. The recent visit of eminent social activists Swami Agnivesh, Medha Patkar and several political leaders from different political parties except the ruling Biju Janata Dal extending support to the anti-Posco stir have boosted the morale of agitating villagers. Meanwhile, the Odisha Government officials are adopting a wait and watch policy to find out a suitable time to enter Dhinkia and Gobindpur for land acquisition.
