In Odisha, land acquisition for the Posco steel project near Paradip of Jagatsinghpur district is likely to resume today. After being unable to go ahead with the land acquisition process due to bad weather conditions for the last two working days, Odisha Government officials are finalising strategies to enter trouble-torn Gobindpur and Dhinkia despite strong opposition by local villagers. A large number of anti-Posoc activists supported by thousands of villagers including children, women and elderly persons have formed human chains in the outskirts of Gobindpur since early this morning to protest forceful land acquisition for the South Korean steel major, Posco. Even as the Odisha Government has already declared that force will not be used to acquire land for the Posco project, the increasing support to the anti-Posco activists and villagers opposing the project by different social activists and political parties has made things more difficult for the state administration. Officials are unable to enter Gobindpur and Dhinkia due to formation of human chains by anti-Posco activists and local villagers. Pro-Posco activists have also stopped construction work for a rehabilitation colony in Polanga of Gada Kujanganin the project area demanding action on their 6-point charter of demands. Eminent social activist, Medha Patkar, is likely to visit Posco project area today to support the agitating villagers who are opposing forceful acquisition of their farm lands for the plant. The strong resistance from Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti, an anti-Posco body, spearheading the agitation and now opposition from Joint Action Committee, a pro-Posco body, for beginning of project work have made things more difficult for the Odisha Government which has been finding it really hard to acquire all the 4004 acres of land needed for the Rs 52,000 crore project, the biggest foreign direct investment in the country.
