Lalit Modi, Vyapam issues force repeated adjournments of both Houses of Parliament

The Lok Sabha today witnessed unprecedented uproar over the Lalit Modi controversy and Vyapam scam. The House was adjourned twice and later for the day due to pandemonium. When the House met at 2.15 PM, Mallikarjun Kharge of Congress and Saugat Rai of the TMC urged Deputy Speaker Dr Thambidurai to take up the two issues for discussion under adjournment motion. However, Dr Thambidurai informed them that the Speaker has already disallowed all the adjournment motions.

Immediately after that, the Congress members trooped into the well shouting slogans. Mr. Kharge alleged that the government wants to suppress the facts and that is why it is not ready for a discussion under the adjournment motion. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu reiterated that the government is ready for a discussion from day one. He said no one can question the Speaker's decision.

As some Congress members behaved in an unruly manner with the Chair, Dr. Thambidurai adjourned the House till 3.30 PM. When the House reassembled again, a war of words took place between treasury and opposition benches. Members from the treasury benches including water resources minister Uma Bharti also trooped into the well.

Mr Naidu took serious objection to the throwing of pieces of paper towards the Chair by some Congress members. As the din continued, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan adjourned the House till 4 PM. The situation was no better when the House re-assembled. The repeated warnings by the Chair to the members to go to their seats went unheeded, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan adjourned the House for the day.
