Former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi has been formally declared president of the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA). The results of the December 19 elections were declared by a court observer in Jaipur today.
According to a Supreme Court order , the votes, in a sealed envelope, were opened under court observation. Modi won by a landslide margin, polling in 24 out of 33 votes, while his opponent Rampal Sharma earned just five.
The apex court had last week cleared the decks for the announcement of results of the RCA elections. The top court also allowed the Board Of Control For Cricket In India,BCCI, to take any action it wants in accordance with the rules, post declaration of results.
In September 2013, the BCCI imposed a life-ban was on Modi accusing him of causing financial irregularities during his tenure as the IPL commissioner. Since then the BCCI had been opposing Modi's return to Indian cricket and had moved the apex court challenging the Rajasthan Sports Act 2005 that enabled him to contest the December elections.
