Lal Bahadur Shastri's 52nd death anniversary observed today

Today is the 52nd death anniversary of India's second Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the former Prime Minister. He said in a tweet, Shastri Ji's impeccable service and courageous leadership will be remembered for generations to come.<br/>'<br/>Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani paid tribute to Shastri ji, saying an epitome of simplicity and integrity, Shastri ji continues to inspire us in our service to the Nation.<br/>'<br/>Congress president Rahul Gandhi also paid tributes to the country's second prime minister. Gandhi invoked the late leader to emphasise the importance of building up unity and solidarity of people.<br/>'<br/>Lal Bahadur Shastri was born in 1904 and held office between June, 1964 and January, 1966. He passed away on this day in 1966.<br/>'<br/>He led the country during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965. His slogan of 'Jai Jawan Jai Kisan' became a clarion call and is still remembered.<br/><br/>AIR Trichy correspondent reports Shasthri ji is specially remembered in Tamil nadu, because he Set an impeccable moral standards as cabinet minister. During his tenure as the Railway Minister in the Nehru cabinet, Madras-Tuticorin Express derailed at Maradaiyar River bridge near Ariyalur, Tamil-Nadu, killing at least 154 people, on November 23, 1956. Shasthri owned up the responsibility for the accident and tendered his resignation from the cabinet.
