Strong winds and heavy rain last night left a trail of destruction in some islands in Lakshadweep. No loss of life has been reported. The most affected island was Kalpeni, where the northern part of the island was completely inundated by sea. Official sources said, nearly 200 families have been evacuated to safer places. Efforts are on to clear the roads in the region. Over 1000 coconut trees were uprooted in the island and several houses damaged. The eastern side breakwater and the helipad have also been damaged. Preliminary estimates have put the loss at over 200 crore rupees. A small cargo vessel used to ferry cargo from Mangalore with six persons on board, anchored near Amini island was reported missing. A search is on for the missing persons. Large scale sea erosion has been reported from some of the islands and the sea continues to be rough. Bharat Seema, the passenger-cum-cargo vessel to Lakshadweep scheduled to leave Kochi this morning has been cancelled following rough weather.
