Lakhs of people take dip at holy rivers on Makar Sankranti day

Lakhs of people took a dip at holy rivers on the occasion of Makar Sankranti Sunday. In Alllahabad, braving cold condition devotees gathered at Sangam since early morning to take holy dip. Police Control Room said that no untoward incident reported from magh mela area.

In West Bengal, lakhs of people took a holy dip at Gangasagar, confluence of the Bhagirathi and the Bay of Bengal. Officials said, as many as 10 watch towers were installed apart from deployment of 6,500 policemen along with coast guards, BSF and Navy personnel to ensure adequate security of the area. Security forces in the sea were equipped with hovercraft and small aircraft.

In Assam, the post-harvest Bhogali Bihu festival is being celebrated across the State with traditional pomp and gaiety . Popularly known as the Magh Bihu, the festival coincides Makara Sankranti.

In Nepal, Maghe Sankranti festival , the first day of Magh as per the Nepali calendar was celebrated across the country.People from Hindu Community took a holy dip in the confluence of rivers and ponds.

Pongal is being celebrated in Tamil Nadu and other parts of southern India. Hindus in Sri Lanka celebrate Thaipongal today.
