Ladakh: Fisheries Directorate makes arrangements to promote Angling as new sector for sustainable economic development

<p style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify;">In Ladakh, Kargil is exploring recreational, sport fishing opportunities yet another adventure tourism avenue in the region. Recreational or sport fishing is one of the most sought-after adventure tourism done with fly fishing methods by employing artificial flies to catch fish with the help of a rod and line. The Fisheries Directorate in Kargil is making arrangements to promote Angling as a new sector for the sustainable economic development of the local populace in coordination with the Tourism department.</p>''<p style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>''<p style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify;">AIR correspondent reports that in Ladakh, Trout fish are flagship species with considerable economic and recreational interest and the most popular game/sport fish amongst Anglers. The fisheries department has identified the Shingo River stretch near Latoo, a bordering village in Kargil, for the proposed angling sports activities. Shingo is endowed with copious amounts of highly oxygenated pristine freshwater highly suitable and conducive for Trout fish. Trout angling is mainly liked by anglers all over the world for its superlative sporting quality.</p>''<p style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>''<p style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify;">Assistant Director Fisheries Kargil Murtaza ALi said foreseeing the immense potential for angling attention shall be paid towards the developing ecotourism by arranging rafts, fishing rods, construction of Anglers' Hut and providing other basic amenities which would woo tourist attention from neighbouring States and from around the world as well.  He also said that Trout Angling competitions would be arranged on the principle of catch & release and festivals like events could also be conducted to associate the local community in promoting eco-tourism in the several places of Kargil which would have a significant impact on the livelihood and socio-economic condition of the local population.</p>''<p style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>''<p style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify;">On the other hand, the UT Administration is also promoting commercial trout farming in the district under the centrally sponsored schemes of Pradhan Mantri Matysa Sampada Youjna, PMMSY, and providing financial assistance to unemployed youths to establish private Trout rearing unit with a 60 percent subsidy on unit cost.</p>''<p style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify;"> </p>''<p style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify;">One of the beneficiaries Sajjad Hussain of Andoo village in Kargil said that he had a piece of marshy land and rearing more than 10,000 No's of Trout seed in the unit and he is expecting to generate an income of up to ten lakh rupees in one culture period of 15-18 months.</p>''<p style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></p>''<p style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #222222;">With the added commercial value to already viable trout fish farming, the fisheries and tourism departments are expecting more income and employment generation in the region in the form of the adventure sport of angling.</span></p>
