In Ladakh, Agriculture and allied sector is the primary industry of the people on which they are dependent and that always remains the priority for the government. With the announcement of Mission Organic Development Initiative (MODI) in Ladakh, farmers are hoping for a drastic change in the way of agriculture practices. A Progressive Farmer Ghulam Mehdi from Minjee, Kargil said that various varieties introduced by the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) like Kargil Tamatoo, which yields more than 14 kilograms of Tomato per plant, Anupam Beans and Kargil Musk Mellon will take the farmers of Kargil towards producing organic Cash Crops. He further said that the biggest challenge is to overcome the shortage of Water as well as increasing the irrigate-able land and for that new techniques should be introduced.<br />''<br />''Despite having a huge land mass the irrigation, land is limited which is needed to be enhanced using modern irrigation techniques.<br />''Reiterating the commitment of the Hill Council towards the development of Agriculture which is the main source of livelihood for the people associated with the sector, the Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC, Kargil Feroz Ahmed Khan has said that concrete measures are underway to augment the sector to improve farmers' economy.<br />''<br />''Mr Khan said that the U T Administration has launched two schemes in the district namely the Mission Organic Development Initiative (MODI) at the cost of 254 crore rupees and Deep Winter Green House Farming scheme with allocation of 38 crore 22 lakh rupees.
