Ladakh due to its arid climate is famous for pseudo cereal like buckwheat. Ladakh Agriculture Department is taking a series of steps to boost its production to double farmers' income and provide high nutrition value to the community. Buckwheat is traditional and second crops in lower altitude areas of Ladakh like Sham region and Bogdang -Turtuk areas along Indo-Pak Border.<br />'' <br />''All India Radio Leh is celebrating 50 years in June this year. AIR correspondent has filed a special story from Sham region.<br />'' <br />''The Agriculture Department is promoting the traditional crops -buckwheat which is now forgotten crops, in both traditional crops areas and nontraditional crops areas. The Department is reviving the Buckwheat cultivation in traditional areas where it has lost in the mind of farmers.<br />'' <br />''After a series of awareness, demonstration and mobilization by the agriculture scientist of the agriculture department, the farmers have restarted the Buckwheat cultivation on their field for the second consecutive this year. The department has distributed seeds at free of cost as incentives in Nurla village in Khalsi Sub division and Saspol village in Saspol block. Revival of traditional crop was started first under Leh district plan. Now it is being promoted  at large scale under the National Food Security Mission as part nutri cereal.<br />'' <br />''After successful trials and experiments in non-traditional crop areas, the Agriculture Department under the centre sponsored scheme is being introduced Buckwheat and quinoa as new crops in Kharu and Chushot blocks from this season. Since it is being introduced for the first time, the department has standardized the sowing scheduled from June 20 to 25.<br />'' <br />''<span style="color: #222222;">Buckwheat is known as super food with high values and the government is making effort as successful with the support of growing interest of the farmers.</span><br />
