External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid has said that India is in touch with the Saudi Arabian government over the kingdom's new work policy and would explore all avenues to find a solution during the three months of grace period announced by Riyadh. He was speaking to reporters in New Delhi yesterday.The Saudi Arabian government had announced a three-month grace period for enforcing its new work policy of Nitaqat law, which would affect thousands of Indian workers there.He said he too will go to the kingdom later in the month to hold discussions with the Saudi authorities on this issue. Meanwhile, Overseas Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi has convened a meeting of state Ministers tomorrow to discuss the issue. There are 6.5 million Indians in the Gulf, including 2.45 million in Saudi Arabia.Meanwhile the Indian Embassy in Riyadh is setting up a panel of local lawyers for legal assistance to Indian workers in Saudi Arabia.They will help the Indian workers facing problems to correct their status in Saudi Arabia and avoid harassments .These firms would provide best course of action under the prevailing Saudi law and are expected to begin their work from third week of April.These legal firms are expected to start work during the third week of April.Meanwhile, Indian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Hamid Ali Rao held a meeting with social workers on Sunday in Riyadh to address their concerns over the possible job losses due to the Nitaqat and the raids. He urged the Social workers to use the three-month grace period announced by Saudi Arabia to correct their status or to arrange exit passes for those returning to India not having valid ravel document. Foreign workers have been given a three-month grace period by the authorities to regularize their status after raids on workplaces last week created panic. According to estimates over 2 million Indian nations are working in Saudi Arabia and a large numbero f them in blue collar jobs are from Kerala.The Indian embassy in Riyadh has also announced that it would start a "Tatakal Service" to deliver the passports of Indian nationals after renewal, booklet change or after any such service required by a passport holder. The Tatkal service on passports will be available at the Umm Ul Hammam office of VFS Global in Riyadh from April 15.The application will be accepted between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and delivery will be from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on all working days.
