Kupwara top in implementing MG-NREGA during current FY

In Jammu and Kashmir, Kupwara has topped in implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MG-NREGA) during the ongoing financial year. The district has achieved 60 lakh maydays of job creation which is more than the average of any other districts of the valley. National rural Employment Guarantee Act scheme is gradually picking up with the department having spent 10 crore rupees out of 26 crore rupees sanctioned for the scheme till December 2010.MG-NREGA was launched in 2005-2006 in Kupwara district along with other 200 most backward districts of the country and it has become most innovative social sector schemes which is doing wonders in this frontier district by stopping distress migration and enhanced the livelihood security of people and crated durable assets in the rural areas. Tariq Ahmad Zargar, project officer wage employment district Kupwara told A.I.R that The activities, which are taken up under MGNREGA, in this hilly district include water conservation and harvesting, micro and minor irrigation works, flood control and protection works, rural connectivity and works of land development belonging to ST/ Sc’families. On the other hand ,a flaw in the scheme is that there is no mechanism to prevent the workers’ wages from declining because of the high food price inflation. Sound Bites of job card holder -‘ Rs 110 per day is meager wage. I am not able to buy household requirements like rice and vegetable for my large family for one day, in this age of inclining inflation. Wages should be immediately hiked from 110 to at least 150.
