Kuddankulam Nuclear power project : Protesters call off fast

After a ten day hunger protest, the struggle committee of the Koodankulam nuclear power project has decided to call it off today. Speaking to newsmen after the discussion with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Ms. J. Jayalalitha this morning, the co-ordinator of the protestors Mr. S.P. Udhayakumar told that the Chief Minister had assured them that the cabinet committee would pass a resolution insisting the Centre to halt the project immediately. He said, the Chief Minister would send a committee to the Prime Minister on the issue. The Committee also appealed to the Chief Minister to impress upon the Centre to opt for alternative energy projects rather than atomic energy projects. Earlier the Minister of State in Prime Minister’s office Mr.V.Narayanasamy met the Chief Minister and appraised her of his meeting with the protestors at Idinthakarai yesterday. He also said he would convey his deliberations to the Prime Minister and assured that he would take a final decision on this.
