After a ten day hunger protest, the struggle committee of the Koodankulam nuclear power project has decided to call it off today. Speaking to newsmen after the discussion with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Ms. J. Jayalalitha this morning, the co-ordinator of the protestors Mr. S.P. Udhayakumar told that the Chief Minister had assured them that the cabinet committee would pass a resolution insisting the Centre to halt the project immediately.
He said, the Chief Minister would send a committee to the Prime Minister on the issue. The Committee also appealed to the Chief Minister to impress upon the Centre to opt for alternative energy projects rather than atomic energy projects.
Earlier the Minister of State in Prime Minister’s office Mr.V.Narayanasamy met the Chief Minister and appraised her of his meeting with the protestors at Idinthakarai yesterday. He also said he would convey his deliberations to the Prime Minister and assured that he would take a final decision on this.
The Congress on Wednesday said the centre is holding consultations with various stake holders to resolve the Koodankulam nuclear power project issue. Talking to the media in New Delhi, party spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that it is a delicate issue and needs to be dealt with caution and patience. He added that government is not insensitive to the legitimate demands.
