The government today said International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has completed its inspection at the Kudankulam Nuclear power project in Tamil Nadu. In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, minister of state in the prime minister's office V Narayansamy said the IAEA officials carried out the inspection in February 2012 as per laid down procedures and in accordance with international agreement on safeguards. He said the inspections were related to the reactor building, fuel storage facilities, inventory of nuclear materials and the memory cards of the surveillance cameras. Mr Narayansamay informed the House that the Kudankulam Nuclear power project had submitted its
data and reports to the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board for its review and stage-wise clearances. In reply to another question, the minister said at present a total capacity of 440 mega watt comprising two nuclear power reactors of 220 mega watt each is in operation at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu. Mr Narayanasamy informed the House, one nuclear power reactor of 500 mega watt is at advanced stage of construction at Kalpakkam. He said this will be the first commercial fast reactor of the country. Mr Narayansamy said the commissioning of the reactor is expected to be completed in 2014-15.
