K'taka turns focus on relief operations after floods recede?,AP situation improves

With the flood situation easing steadily, Karnataka government has now turned its focus on marshalling resources to take up relief and rehabilitation operations in the rain-ravaged northern and coastal regions.<br/> <br/>Based on initial reports, the state has estimated that the loss caused by the floods to infrastructure and standing crops in 25 lakh hectares area amounted to Rs 16,500 crore. Around 2.5 lakh houses have either collapsed or damaged by the torrential rains with as many as 1.8 crore people affected. <br/><br/>The death toll as of Monday evening was 194. In Andhra Pradesh, the flood situation has improved a bit in Krishna, Guntur and Nalgonda districts with inflows reaching Prakasam barrage at Vijayawada city have come down.<br/><br/>However, the danger of submergence still looms large over 200 island villages and the Diviseema region as nearly 10 lakh cusecs of water is being released from Prakasam barrage downstream. But for the Dams built across river Krishna at Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar that have handled inflows at highest level of 25.6 lakh cusecs for several hours the damage could have been at unimaginable levels.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, people have started reaching their homes from the relief camps as the floodwater further receded in Kurnool and Mahboobnagar districts. Restoration of roads, power and water supply is being done. 52 persons have died in Andhra due to unprecedented floods. <br/><br/>
