Karnataka has begun release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu amidst protests from the Janata Dal (Secular) party workers and pro-Kannada organisations in Mysore and Mandya. According to the undertaking given to the Supreme Court, the state has to release 10,000 cusecs of water everyday from its reservoirs till 20th of this month. The Cauvery River Authority headed by the Prime Minister will meet on 19th to look into the demands of riparian states regarding sharing of Cauvery river waters. Meanwhile, the Mandya District Farmers Welfare Committee has urged the state government to appeal to the Supreme Court once again about the difficulties faced by drought hit farmers of Cauvery basin due to shortage of water. They are opposing release of water to Tamilnadu. Chief Minister Jagadish Shetter said that the Cauvery River Authority will be urged to evolve a distress formula based on ground realities for sharing of water.
