Campaigning for the Karnataka Assembly Elections comes to an end this evening. 223 out of 224 constituencies will go to polls on 5th of this month, while counting will take place on the 8th. The election in one constituency was countermanded due to the death of BJP candidate in Periyapattana in Mysore district. The election in this constituency will be held on the 28th of May. Our correspondent reports that during the campaign, issues of corruption, development and good governance stood out among others. Regional parties stressed on regional issues and how they are a better choice than national parties. The Chief Electoral Officer has urged voters not to cast proxy vote and accept gifts from candidates. In the 2008 Assembly elections, the BJP secured 33.86 per cent of votes and had managed to get 110 seats, compared to the Congress' 34.59 percent which gave it only 80 seats. JDS, with 19.13 percent, was third with 28 seats, while six independents were also victorious. But this time the presence of Karnataka Janatha Party, BSR Congress and greater presence of Samajwadi party and BSP has made the election multifarious in the state.
