K’taka halts release of Cauvery water citing depleted storage; CM filing fresh plea before CRA today

Karnataka has stopped release of Cauvery river water from the Krishna Raja Sagar, KRS dam citing depleted storage. Talking to reporters in Mandya, KRS chief executive engineer Vijayakumar yesterday said, as per the direction of Irrigation Department heads, they have closed down the five crest gates through which the water is flowing to Tamil Nadu.Karnataka will file a review petition over water sharing, before the Cauvery River Authority, CRA today. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi yesterday, Karnataka CM Jagdish Shettar said the state would also demand Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to take up the issue immediately. Congress Union ministers from Karnataka SM Krishna, Mallikarjun Kharge and K H Muniyappa and 16 BJP MPs from the state, led by M Venkaiah Naidu, met Dr Singh separately and sought seeking a review of the CRA decision.Earlier Prime Minister had ruled out a review of the CRA's decision asking Karnataka to release 9000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu till October 20, rejecting a plea of Congress and BJP leaders from the state. Dr Singh made it clear that only the authority can revisit the decision about the state releasing water to Tamil Nadu.
