K'taka govt drops ?1800 cr worth steel bridge project

Karnataka government today dropped its most ambitious Steel Bridge project bowing to widespread protest from political parties, environmentalists and citizen groups. Speaking to media, Minister for Bengaluru Development K J George said that bowing to the public demand, the project has been dropped. <br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports the Karnataka Government dropped the 6.9 km long and Rs 1800 crore worth steel bridge project aimed at easing traffic movement on the busy road leading to the Kempe Gowda International Airport. <br/> <br/>This project had attracted sever criticism from the opposition BJP levelling charges of kickbacks. On the other hand environmentalists and various NGOs criticised the government for the felling of more than 800 tress for the project. The National Green Tribunal had also issued stay for the project seeking details from the State Government about felling of large number of trees. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that the project was conceived in the interest of the development, but if the public don't want it , let it be dropped. <br/><br/>
