Karnataka celebrates Udagi festival today, ushering in the New Year, marking the first day of the lunar calendar, Chaitra masa.The Ugadi festival derives its importance as a celebration of newness in the environment, as it is the spring season. The Panchanga, or the almanac itself is worshipped for a fruitful year ahead. Neem and jaggery is distributed to make a statement to accept joy and sorrow equally. Mango leaf festoon is tied over the threshold and neem leaf bunch are tucked on each side. People have oil bath, wear new clothes, visit the temple and prepare dishes like mango rice, obbattu or holige on the occasion.
