The leader of the Lok Sabha, Finance Minister, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee today informed the House that Centre is concerned about Tamilians living in Sri Lanka. He said Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh has written two letters to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Ms. Jayalalitha and DMK leader, K. Karunanidhi on the issue.
Mr. Mukherjee informed the House that the External Affairs Minister, Mr. S.M. Krishana will unveil the strategy of the government on this issue if members feel it necessary. Mr. Mukherjee made this statement after some agitated members raised the issue. Some of them raised slogans pressing to support the resolution against Sri Lanka in United Nations Human Rights Commission.
The issue led to an uproar in the Rajya Sabha after DMK and AIADMK members with the support from Left forced an adjournment in the House. The House was first adjourned for 40 minutes and later till 2 pm.As the House met for the day, DMK members were all their feet wanting to know Government's approach towards Sri Lanka in the backdrop of a US supported resolution against the violation of human rights in the island nation. Responding to the demand of members that the External Affairs Minister must make a statement on the issue the Parliamentry Affairs Minister, Mr. P.K.Bansal said that he will get in touch with him and government will come with a statement. This did not satisfy the members who wanted the assurance on the issue, leading to its adjournment.
