Krishna says to some extend talks with Pakistan satisfactory

The external Affairs Minister Mr. S M Krishna has said to an extent he is satisfied with the talks he held with his Pakistani counterpart yesterday. Before leaving back home in a brief chat with newsmen he said he said that he had come to Islamabad to reduce the trust deficit and to a large extent it has been achieved. He added there was no acrimony between the principal actors in the press interaction yesterday, it was in the questions. When asked about the comments made by the Home Secretary on the eve of talks he observed everything is on record. Pakistan earlier said that the statement made by Mr. Pillai has vitiated the atmosphere. He is leaving back later in the day.
Early in the morning the external affairs minister held a meeting with President of Pakistan Muslim league Shahbaz Sharief and exchanged views on the issues of mutual concern. He also met a MQM delegation and discussed the issues of mutual interest. Yesterday Mr. Krishna held meetings with the president and the prime minister of Pakistan. He held extensive and extended discussions with his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi on a host of issues.
AIR correspondent reports from Islamabad that differences on Kashmir and Balochistan issues came to the fore during the media interaction after the talks. The two foreign ministers decided to continue the peace dialogue. Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi assured India of speedy trial of Mumbai terror attackers and S M Krishna said that that the assurance has been given at the highest level to bring the people responsible for Mumbai carnage to justice .Mr. Qureshi said Islamabad will seriously investigate the leads provided by New Delhi about the involvement of Pakistani born American David Hadley in the terror trail. The issue was taken up with Pakistan by the Home Minister P Chidambaram during his recent visit to Islamabad. Mr. Krishna made it clear that the inputs from Hadley received by FBI and the Indian team have been given to Pakistan and a fast track action on this front will be a great confidence building measure. Pakistan foreign minister noted that the terrorism is a common concern of the two countries and it calls for a working out a common strategy to eradicate this menace. Mr. Qureshi however, wanted India to send to Pakistan the magistrate and the police officials who investigated Ajmal Amir Kasab, sentenced to death for his role in the Mumbai assault, for deposing in the Pakistani courts.
The Pakistani side raised the issue of Balochistan at the meeting to which India made it clear that it had never interfered in the internal affairs of any country. Pakistan has not provided even a shred of evidence to New Delhi so far to show any India link with the ethnic violence in the province.
Pakistan also raised alleged human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir in the context of present turmoil in the valley. Mr. Krishna however made it quite clear to the Pakistani leadership that the state has a duly elected government, tasked with dealing with the law and order situation. He also stated that the state government and human rights organizations would immediately take up any case of human rights violations in the valley and there was no reason for Islamabad to be concerned about it.
Mr. Qureshi said that various issues and confidence building measures were discussed in a free and candid manner in the extended discussions. Mr. Krishna asserted that Infiltration from across the border and loc has gone up by 40 percent and expressed hope that Pakistan will keep its commitment not to allow the use of territory under its control for terrorist activities against India. Reiterating India’s desire to sea and democratic and prosperous Pakistan, Mr. S M Krishna said that he has invited the Foreign Minister of Pakistan to India and he is looking forward to his arrival.

Meanwhile, BJP today said External Affairs Minister S M Krishna did not defend Home Secretary G K Pillai when he was openly castigated by Pakistan's Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi. BJP spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad regretted Foreign Minister of Pakistan chose to attack India's Home secretary. Mr. Pillai had earlier this week said the ISI had coordinated Mumbai terror attacks. The Congress on its part described attempt by Pakistan to equate Pillai's remarks with Jammat-Ud-Dawah (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed's anti-India hate speeches is ridiculous. Party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said the Home secretary's statement is only India's stand. Mr. Singhvi said there is no basis for comparison of statements by Hafiz Saeed or Salahuddin with the home secretary. Yesterday, at a joint news press conference with S M Krishna in Islamabad, Mr. Qureshi said Pillai's remarks were uncalled for.
