External Affairs Minister S M Krishna arrived in Maldives this morning for a two-day visit to boost bilateral cooperation in various fields. He was received by the Maldivian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Naseem at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport at Male. The High Commissioner of India, D Mulay was also present at the airport.Mr. Krishna will hold talks with his Maldivian counterpart Ahmed Naseem on a range of bilateral, regional and global issues of common interests. He is also scheduled to call on the Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed. He will also inaugurate an India Cultural Centre in Male besides visiting the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital.The 200-beded hospital in Male was established in 1995 with India contributing Rs 42.5 crore. It now serves as the most advanced tertiary care hospital in the country and is the most visible symbol of India's assistance to the Maldives. The External Affairs Minister will also offer five million US Dollars as cash assistance to Maldives for organising the SAARC Summit to be held here in November. A press statement from the Maldives’ government said that Mr Krishna will also visit Addu City to observe the progress of the preparations underway for the upcoming SAARC Summit.
