Koodankulam row: Situation tense, under control

In Tamil Nadu, the situation is tense but under control at Idinthakarai beach in Tirunelveli district where protests are being held against the decision to upload fuel in the nuclear reactor of Koodankulam Power Plant.

Police has sealed off the entire area around the Plant. Earlier police fired tear gas shells in the air and resorted to mild lathicharge to disperse the crowd gathered at the sea-shore near the nuclear plant. District Collector Selvaraj had issued Section 144 prohibitory orders to prevent any untoward incident.

The loading of fuel was to be done this week and the nuclear power plant was to be operational by this month end. Meanwhile, the fishermen in Tuticorin district did not venture into the sea in support of the protesters.
