Five medals, two gold, two silver, and a bronze, were won by Uttar Pradesh athletes at the 19th Senior and 14th Junior National Para Powerlifting Championship held at the SAI Complex, Kolkata.
More than 150 athletes from 24 states competed in the National Games, which were held under the authority of the Indian Paralympic Committee. Sumit Kumar of Meerut won gold in the Seniors 97 kg category, while Vijay Kumar of Meerut won gold in the Juniors 61 kg category. Silver medals were also won by Ishwar Singh and Shyam Singh. Zainab Khatun, the first female powerlifter, made history by earning a bronze medal in the 61 kg division.
JP Singh, Chairman of the Indian Paralympic Committee for Powerlifting, expressed his delight in the sport's overall growth.
