Sports persons and hockey fans in Kolkata on Monday remembered with due solemnity the contribution of India's best known hockey player Major Dhyan Chand Singh on his 106 birthday.Dhyan Chand was born on August 29, 1905 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. He was introduced to hockey at the age of 14. At the age of 16, he was inducted into the Punjab regiment and soon got good mentors for his career.In one of the hockey matches, he made his team win which was almost on the verge of losing by 2 goals. This was the match of the Punjab Tournament in Jhelum. From then on, he was named the 'Hockey Wizard'.The day was also known as the National Sports Day, when the Union government gives away prizes every year, including the highest Khel Ratna Award, to mark the contribution of Dhyan Chand.The Bengal Hockey Association also celebrated the day with annual prize distribution to the distinguished players at the Historic Town Hall.The West Bengal Hockey Lovers' Association, in association with Bengal Olympic Association, was to unveil a 30 inches statue of Dhyan Chand in the heart of the city.It will be unveiled by four-time Olympian Leslie W Claudius. Dhyan Chand's son, Ashok Kumar, will also be present during the function.
