Kolkata Knight Riders beat Deccan Chargers in opening encounter of third IPL cricket

In the opening match of the third edition of Indian Premier League cricket at Mumbai last night, Kolkata Knight Riders beat defending champions Deccan Chargers by 11 runs. Chasing a victory target of 162 runs, the Decan Chargers could make 150 runs for the loss of seven wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. Adam Gilchrist made 54, while VVS Laxman scored 22 runs. C Langeveldt claimed two wickets.Earlier, put in to bat, the Knight Riders went off to a dismal start by losing two wickets in the first four balls of the tournament. Angelo Mathews and Owais Shah struck unbeaten half centuries to rescue Kolkata Knight Riders and steer them to a fighting 161 for four. For Decan Chargers, C Vaas claimed two wickets while R P Singh and Jaskaran bagged one wicket each.In today's matches Mumbai Indians will take on Rajasthan Royals at Mumbai, while Kings Eleven Punjab meets Delhi Daredevils at Mohali.
