The Minister of State for Agriculture Professor K V Thomas says all fishing harbours and fish landing centres in the country will be modernised and the first such fishing harbour will come up at Thoppumpady in Kochi within the next 18 months. <br/><br/>Addressing a press conference in Kochi, Prof Thomas said the Thoppumpady project is estimated to cost over ten crore rupees, of which three crore has already been disbursed. He said states have been asked to identify the fishing harbours and fish landing centres to be taken up for modernisation.<br/><br/>Prof Thomas said registration of all aqua culture units in the country will be made mandatory as part of the measures being taken to eliminate antibiotic residue and to ensure pre-harvest testing.<br/><br/>The Minister said the draft of the proposed Fisheries Regulation and Mangement Act has been circulated and a meeting of all stakeholders will be convened within the next two months.
