Kochi NIA court to pronounce punishment for banned SIMI activists today

The NIA court in Kochi will today pronounce the punishment for the activists of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India in the secret meeting case of 2006. Earlier on last Wednesday, the NIA court of Kochi found five people guilty under various sections of Indian Penal Code and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.<br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports, the members of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India were charge sheeted for organizing anti-government, seditious meeting near Kochi on August 15th 2006. When the court heard the arguments about the quantum of punishment on Thursday, the prosecution demanded maximum punishment under law for the people found guilty as they were engaged in activities against the country and government. At the same time, advocates for the accused requested for lesser punishment, pointing out the family backgrounds of the people who were found guilty. <br/><br/>
