For the first time in India, a 40-year old woman has undergone a 'knifeless' – radio- surgery for removal of a brain
lesion. The surgery was conducted at Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital in Coimbatore in Tamilnadu.
Doctors at the hospital said this is the first time in the country that the brain lesion had been treated by stereotactic radio surgery. The procedure involves sending a high dose radiation beam precisely over the well-demarcated brain lesion. The patient could resume normal activities in a matter of hours.
Chairman of the hospital Dr Nalla Palanisamy told reporters that the woman was fully awake when the she underwent the radio surgery.
