K’kulam nuke plant safe, can withstand natural disaster and terror attack: Centre to SC

The Centre has told the Supreme Court that the Kudankulam nuclear power plant is completely safe and designed to withstand all kinds of natural disaster and terrorist attacks.

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited which operates the plant, in its affidavit said that the design includes provisions for withstanding external events like earthquakes, tsunami, storm, tidal waves, cyclones, shock waves, aircraft impact on main buildings and fire.

The affidavit also said that regarding the vulnerability of the nuclear power plant to terrorists attacks, sabotage etc. it has elaborate physical security arrangements in place to ensure its security.

The structural design of the facilities at the plant ensures that in the event of a physical attack, the structure would prevent the release of any radioactivity into the public domain.
