In Puducherry, Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi has declared 'null and void' Chief Minister V Narayanasamy's order banning use of social media for official communication. In her order today, Ms Bedi termed it to be in contravention of the guidelines, rules and policies in force.

On 2nd of this month, the Government had asked its officers to desist from the use of social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and Whatsapp for official communication. In his order, the Chief Minister had cautioned them that as servers of these platforms are outside the country, their use is violative of Official Secrets Act.

The Lieutenant Governor had earlier created various Whatsapp groups for speedy communication among officers. Sources said, the Government saw the LG's move as an attempt to by-pass the elected Government by passing instructions directly to officers.
