Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen clocked the fastest time in the second practice at the Bahrain Grand Prix, followed by the Red Bulls of Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel at Sakhir international circuit in Manma on Friday. The last years runners up and the winner at the season-opening Australian GP was 0.03 seconds faster than Webber and 0.12 quicker than Vettel. Ferrari's Fernando Alonso was fourth. Force India's Paul di Resta was fifth. Earlier Felipe Maassa on his Ferrari set up the pace for the race winning the first practice session at Sakhir international circuit. The race got underway in the shadows of protest calls by the opposition. Teams and drivers have mostly remained silent on the political crisis, and the FIA, the governing body of world motor sports, has endorsed the race. It said the Bahrain GP should proceed following assurances from the local promoter and the authorities that security, their responsibility, will be guaranteed for all participants. Security forces are on high alert to prevent possible clashes from marring the race. Bahrain Government Spokesperson Samira Rajab said Bahrain is ready to host the F1 and there are no security issues. The event was cancelled in 2011 but went ahead last year incident free despite the protest calls. The event is seen as a booster to the image and economy of Bahrain amidst protests inspired by Arab Spring.
