Killing of tribal woman by militants: Centre rushes 1000 para forces personnel to Meghalaya; seeks state report

The Centre has taken a tough stand against the worsening law and order situation in the Garo Hills, of Meghalaya after the shocking murder of a tribal woman by militants.

The Central government has rushed 1,000 Central para-military force personnel to Meghalaya and also sought a report from the State Government. Union Minister of State for Home, Kiren Rijiju spoke to Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and urged him to take strong action against the militants for the heinous crime.

The state government is also taking major steps following the brutal murder of a woman in Raja Ranggot village of south garo hills district. State Home minister Roshan Warjari visited the victim's house today.

She also visited Chokpot police station and gave necessary instructions to the police. District SP, Lakadoar Syiem said, the situation is under control and a search operation is on but nobody has been arrested till now.

Chief minister Mukul Sangma has said his government is offering a one-time peace settlement option to all militant groups active in the state. He said, the government will set up a special court to prosecute the militants involved in the crime. The State Government has also announced an ex-gratia of 1 lakh rupees for the family of the victim.

On the other hand, a gun battle between a joint team of commandos of Meghalaya’s Special Weapons and Tactics, SWAT unit and the Combat Battalion for Resolute Action, COBRA with GNLA is continuing since this morning at Adugre village near Durama hills range in East Garo hills Distrcts.

Security forces intensified combing operations against GNLA rebels in western Meghalaya.

Police sources say that backed with sophisticated weapons, a group of ULFA cadres are also reported to be present with the GNLA rebels in their camp.
