Kidney racket: 5 doctors among 6 convicted

In Punjab, all six accused including five doctors and a former Haryana Police Inspector were convicted in connection with the 2002 infamous kidney scam. The Additional District Session Judge of Amritsar, GS Bakshi will announce the quantum of punishment next Friday.

All accused, who were present in the court, were arrested and sent to the Amritsar Central Jail after they were pronounced guilty yesterday. The five convicted doctors are former Principal of Government Medical College (Amritsar) OP Mahajan, Former Head of Forensic Department Jagdish Gargi, SK Grover, HS Bhutani and Rajinder Singh. The sixth convict is former Haryana Police Inspector Suresh Kumar. Kumar, who is the recipient of the kidney of a minor boy, got it transplanted illegally with the help of these doctors. The minor boy was threatened at gunpoint to donate his kidney.
