<br/>Minister for Minority Affairs, Mr. Salman Khurshid has called for the preservation and promotion of languages belonging to linguistic minorities in view of the UNESCO report that in India 126 languages are in danger of disappearing. Inaugurating a one-day conference on the International Mother Language Day in New Delhi today, Mr. Khurshid said such a challenge can be met by developing and adopting mother tongue as medium of instruction in primary schools across the country.<br/><br/>Highlighting the ethos of diversity in Indian culture, the minister said that there are 234 mother languages with a speakers' strength of 10,000. Mr. Khurshid assured that the government would take all possible measures for constitutional safeguards for 23 crores people belonging to linguistic minorities. The conference was organised by the Commissioner of Linguistic Minorities, CLM, and thousand of delegates from across the country took part in the deliberations.
