The country's foodgrain production is estimated to rise by nine percent to an all-time high of over 135 million tonnes in the kharif season of 2016-17. After, independence, India had achieved record Kharif production of over 131 million tonnes in 2011- 2012. In the last kharif season it stood at 124.01 million tonnes. Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh today released the first advance estimate of foodgrain output for the current 2016-17 crop year. According to the data, rice production is estimated at an all-time high of 93.88 million tonnes as against 91.31 million tonnes in the last kharif season. <br/><br/>Production of pulses, whose retail prices have risen sharply due to a fall in production in the last two years, is<br/>pegged at a record 8.7 million tonnes in kharif this year which is 57 per cent higher from the previous year. Production of tur is pegged at 4.29 million tonnes and urad at over 2 million tonnes in this year's kharif season. The Coarse cereal production is estimated to grow to 32.45 million tonnes in the kharif season. However, the production of sugarcane is expected to be 305.25 million tonnes which is lower by 46.92 million tonnes than the last year's production.
