Khaleda Zia challenges HC order asking her to vacate Dhaka Cantt. house

In Bangladesh, BNP Chairperson and Leader of the Opposition Khaleda Zia today filed an appeal petition in the Supreme Court against the High Court verdict which upheld the government notice asking her to vacate the Dhaka Cantonment house. In her appeal petition, Khaleda Zia has urged the Supreme Court to stay the High Court order asking her to vacate the Cantonment residence within a month. On Oct 13 this year, the High Court dismissed a petition filed by the Opposition leader challenging the notice of the Directorate of Military Lands and Cantonments asking her to vacate the cantonment residence on allegations of anomalies and irregularities in allotment. The government asserted that a civilian cannot get a resident lease within the cantonment area in the military zone. In addition to this the government argued that while one person cannot get allotment of two government houses, Khaleda Zia has been allotted a house in the Gulshan area of Dhaka in addition to the Cantonment house. The High Court upheld the legality of the notice and asked the Leader of BNP to vacate the house within 30 days. The 2.72-acre plot was originally the official residence of the army's deputy chief of staff, a position held by Ziaur Rahman, who eventually became the military ruler of the country. The house was later allotted to his widow Khaleda Zia and her two sons following the assassination of Ziaur Rahman.
