Kerala government has decided to step up alround security off the state coast keeping in view frequent incidents of merchant vessels hitting fishing boats causing deaths of hapless fishermen. After a high level security review with Indian Navy, Coast Guard, Director General of shipping and other stake holders in Thiruvananthapuram, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that apart from starting ten coastal police stations, satellite based communication equipment will be provided to fishermen with Central assistance. AIR correspondent reports that the two Italian marines accused of murdering Indian fishermen have been put behind bars at the Central prison in Thiruvananthapuram yesterday evening as their judicial custody has been extended up to 19th of this month. At the same time, Singapore flagged Indian ship suspected of causing death of fishermen last week will be inspected by Coast Guard and other officials in Chennai today. Alarmed by frequent incidents of ships causing deaths of fishermen, the state government has decided to reemploy retired navy and coast guard personnel in coastal police stations of Kerala.
