In Kerala, the state cabinet meeting today will finalise a concrete action plan to address the Mullaperiyar dam safety issue.Ruling UDF is holding a special meeting to discuss the sensitive issue. Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan said that if needed, LDF can shoulder the cost of a new dam in Mullaperiyar.Meanwhile, the water level of the 116 year old dam continues to be at the maximum of 136.4 feet and latest reports indicate that water seepage has increased during the last two days.Both opposition leader V S Achuthandan and KPPC President Ramesh Chennitha are on a visit to Mullaperiyar dam to share the concerns of lakhs of people living in four districts of Kerala.Mass agitations and hunger strike by political leaders continue in different parts of Kerala demanding immediate reduction of water level of the dam to 120 feet.All major political parties are demanding construction of new dam. At the same time, reports from Delhi that the PMO has directed water resources minister to facilitate a meeting between chief Ministers of Kerala and Tamil Nadu has brought a sense relief in political circles.National Human Rights Commission has assured the MPs from Kerala that it will look into the issue.Kerala government has already signed an MOU with Roorkie, IIT to study the impact of recent tremors in Mullaperiyar dam area. Both ruling front and opposition parties urged Tamil Nadu government to sort out the issue on war footing considering the safety of lakhs of people in Kerala.Situated in Kerala, Mullaperiyar dam is on 999 year lease to Tamil Nadu signed during British rule.
