Kerala to continue giving water to TN if peoples' safety living downstream Mullaperiyar dam taken care of: Chandy

Kerala Chief Minister Oomen Chandy has said, his state will continue to give water to Tamil Nadu if it is allowed to take care of the safety of its people living downstream of Mullaperiyar dam. Speaking to newsmen on the sidelines of South Zone Chief Minister’s Conference in Bangalore, Mr. Oomen Chandy said, he spoke to Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Panneerselvam on Mullaperiyar dam issue, asking him to convey this message to Chief Minister Jayalalitha. He said it is in Kerala’s interest to provide water to Tamil Nadu as it depends on vegetables and fruits grown in four districts of that state neighbouring Kerala. He said the dam is more than 150 years old and build using obsolete technology. Referring to tremors felt in the area recently, he said, it is better to reinforce the dam. He hoped that the cordial relations between the two states will continue and the issue will be resolved amicably.
