Even as the high power committee appointed by the Supreme Court is meeting today in Delhi to consider Mullapperiyar dam issue an emergency meeting of Kerala state cabinet will be held this evening at Thiruvananthapuram to discuss the safety of 116 year old dam. The state government will be filing an interim petition before the Supreme Court on Wednesday requesting lowering of water level of the dam to 120 feet on safety grounds. Meanwhile, two ministers of the state cabinet has also decided to participate in Satyagraha on the issue today. At the same time, Tamil Nadu has demanded that CISF force should be deployed at the dam to avoid man made calamity. The special cabinet meeting is likely to take a decision on the Advocate General Dandapani who reportedly misrepresented the state's stand in the High Court on Mullapperiyar dam safety. An urgent meeting of KPCC is also held today to discuss the issue. At the same time, mass agitation supported by different political parties and their youth wings is gaining further momentum in different parts of Idukki district. Apart from political parties leaders of socio-cultural organisations have come out in support of Mullapperiyar dam safety. The water level of the dam has slightly decreased due to respite in rain and water level of nearby Idukki reservoir is being reduced as a precaution. Measures are in place to shift people from periyar river banks if the water level increases unusually.
