Kerala police to search Italian vessel for arms seizure

The Kerala Police will conduct a search on the Italian vessel Enrica Lexie this afternoon to seize the weapons used to kill the two fishermen off Kollam coast a week ago.A meeting of senior police officials took place in Kochi in this connection. The seizure of the weapons is vital in the case and the police have secured a search warrant from a court at Kollam for this purpose. The captain of the ship had earlier objected to the handing over of the weapons on the grounds that they will be handed over only to the Italian military authorities or to an international agency dealing with maritime economic zone violations.Meanwhile, the Kerala High Court will be considering a petition moved by Dora Valentine, wife of Jelastine, one of the two fishermen killed in the firing. She had sought a compensation of one crore rupees from the shipping company. The matter came up before the court this morning, which directed the rectification of some of the technicalities in the petition. The petition will be considered this afternoon. Lawyers representing the Italian shipping company objected to the pauper petition moved by Dora, who sought exemption from paying the court fee, which runs to over eight lakh rupees.
