Kerala Minister surrenders before Special court

In Kerala, former State Electricity Minister and Kerala Congress-B leader R Balakrishna Pillai surrendered before the Special Court in Kochi dealing with the Idamalayar case this morning. Another accused in the case, P K Sajeevan, a close associate of Pillai also surrendered before the court.The Special Court Judge Dr V Vijayakumar directed to send them to the Poojappura Central jail at Thiruvananthapuram and grant them necessary medical facilities. The court also directed that Balakrishna Pillai be given adequate security in jail. It may be recalled that the Special Court had issued non-bailable arrest warrants against three persons accused in the Idamalayar caselast Wednesday. Another accused, Ramabhadran Nair, former Chairman of the Kerala State Electricity Board did not surrender before the court today. The case relates to the awarding of contracts in the eighties for the construction of a power tunnel and a surge shaft for the Idamalayar Power project at exhorbitant rates, causing a loss of about two crore rupees to the Kerala State Electricity Board . The Supreme Court had recently sentenced the accused to one year rigorous imprisonment in connection with the case.
