The Kerala High Court today directed the state government to inform the time required for water from Mullaperiyar dam to reach Idukki dam and from there to the sea by opening the Cheruthoni dam gates. A Division Bench of the High Court also sought details regarding the amount of water that can be flushed out of the Cheruthoni dam gates in an hour. The High Court was considering a bunch of petitions relating to the state of preparedness, in case of an eventuality involving the Mullaperiyar dam. The Court posted the hearing of the petitions to next Tuesday. Earlier, in a statement filed in the High Court, the state government said it has worked out disaster mitigation plans and directions in this regard have been issued to various departments. It said 450 families have been identified to be evacuated in case of any eventuality and eight schools have been earmarked for their rehabilitation. Five control rooms have already been opened and digital seismographs and state of art equipment to sense seismic disturbances will be installed. The government also said that it has been decided to prepare a disaster contingency plan and set up a real time monitoring sub centre of Hazard, Vulnerability and Risk Assessment Cell at Idukki by this month end.
