Kerala High Court on Friday directed Centre to allow P U Chitra to participate in the World Athletics Championships in London next month. The High Court issued the interim order while considering the Kerala athlete's plea that she was left out of the Indian team despite being eligible to compete in the Worlds having won the 1,500m gold in the recent Asian Championships at Bhuwaneshwar.Athletics Federation of India had justified her exclusion saying her performances were not up to the world standard. However, it is alleged that three athletes including Chitra were left out of the squad to squeeze in coaches and supporting staff. The Indian contingent selected for the meet comprises 24 athletes and a 13-member support staff. Two other athletes who have been omitted from the squad along with Chitra are 3000-meter steeplechaser Sudha Singh, and Ajoy Kumar Saroj (men's 1500m). Both of whom had won gold in their respective events at the 22nd Asian Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar.
