The centre has given approval for the terms of reference for carrying out the environmental impact assessment of the Vizhinjam Trans Shipment Port project near Thiruvananthapuram. The Union Minister of Environment and Forests Mr Jairam Ramesh said in Thiruvananthapuram today that the environmental impact assessment will be done at the site already selected by the Kerala government and will be completed within a year. Mr. Ramesh was addressing a press conference after holding a high level meeting with Kerala Chief Minister Mr. Ommen Chandy and his cabinet colleagues on various projects pending with the centre for environmental clearance. He said the Kerala government has agreed to set up the State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority and the State Expert Appraisal Committee. The Minister said the centre is in discussion with World Bank and UNDP for a 90 crore rupee grant for the restoration of the Vembanad Eco System and added that 10 crore rupees will be sanctioned immediately for starting the desilting, sewage treatment and pollution control work in the lake. Mr Ramesh ruled out the possibility of granting clearance for the Athirampally power project. Terming the proposal for a cricket stadium in Edakochi as a closed chapter , he said action will be taken against those responsible for violation of Coastal Regulation Zone norms.
